About this product
Break up a bed and pull the weeds in one go.
A hand tiller with four star-shaped gears of nine teeth each, a hardened steel weeding blade and a handle you set to your height.
Compacted soil is the reason seedlings sulk and water runs off instead of soaking in. Rolling this tiller over a bed crumbles the top layer so roots, air and water get in.
Four interlocking star gears, nine teeth each, roll through the soil and break it fine. The built-in blade, hardened manganese steel, hooks out weeds as you go. The handle adjusts to your height, the grip is rubber, and the shaft is stainless so it shrugs off rust. No cord, no petrol.

Loosening compacted soil, weeding and aerating garden beds by hand. Use it to prep a bed for planting, work in compost or keep weeds down between rows.
How is it different from a hoe?
A hoe scrapes. This rolls. The four star gears crumble the soil as you push and pull, and the blade behind them hooks out the weeds. One pass does both jobs.
What do I get?
One hand tiller with the rotating head, the built-in weeding blade and the adjustable handle.
How do I use it?
Set the handle to your height, push the gears into the bed and roll it back and forth. Use the blade to hook out any weeds the gears lift. Work in strips across the bed.
Will it break up hard ground?
It breaks the top layer of compacted bed soil well. For ground that has never been dug, loosen it with a fork first, then use the tiller to crumble it fine.
Does it need power?
No. It is a manual tool. You push and pull, the gears turn.
What is it made of?
Four interlocking star-shaped gears with nine teeth each, a hardened manganese steel blade with a protective coating, a stainless steel shaft, a reinforced plastic sleeve and a rubber grip.
How much does it cost?
$149. Delivery is free once your order is $60 or more, so a single order qualifies.
Are there other sizes or options?
One tiller is listed. The handle adjusts to your height.
What do the photos show?
The tiller and its head in use on a garden bed. Plants and garden props are not included.
Which specs should I check before I buy?
The four 9-tooth gears, the manganese steel blade, the adjustable handle and the rubber grip. If anything is unclear, ask us first.
How many do I need?
One. Set the quantity on this page or in your basket.
Can I order more than one?
Yes. Set the quantity on this page or change it in your basket.
Can I use it between plants?
Yes. The head is narrow enough to run between rows in a veg bed or around shrubs without disturbing the roots, if you keep a little distance.
Will it work in stony soil?
It copes with small stones. Pick out the bigger ones first or they jam the gears.
Any safety tips?
Wear gloves and closed shoes, keep fingers away from the gears while they turn, and check the handle sections are locked before you start.
What if the ground is baked hard?
Water the bed the day before so the soil gives, or fork it over first. Do not force the gears into rock-hard ground.
How do I look after it?
Knock the soil off the gears, wipe the blade, and store it dry. A drop of oil on the gear axle now and then keeps it rolling smoothly.
Does the handle adjust?
Yes. Set the length to suit your height or the job so you are not stooping.
Can I check it will suit my beds before I buy?
Yes. Tell us what soil you have and what you want to do, and we will tell you straight whether this is the right tool.
Is the price in New Zealand dollars?
Yes. Every price and checkout total is in NZD.
What does delivery cost?
Free when your goods total after any discount is $60 or more. Under that, delivery is a flat $22.
How long does delivery take?
Allow 24-48 hours for handling, then an estimated 5-7 days in transit. These are estimates, not a promised arrival date.
Can I use the valued-customer code?
Yes. It takes 15% off the goods. Delivery is not discounted, and free delivery is worked out on the discounted goods total.
How do I track my order?
Use the Order Tracking page with the details we send after dispatch. If anything looks stuck, email us with your order reference.
Can I return it if I change my mind?
Yes, within 15 days of receipt, as long as it is unused and in original resaleable condition with proof of purchase. A $59 restocking fee and return postage apply to eligible change-of-mind returns. Your statutory rights are separate.
What if it arrives damaged or wrong?
Email us with your order reference and a couple of photos. The change-of-mind fee does not apply to faulty, damaged or incorrect goods, and your Consumer Guarantees Act rights are unaffected.
Can I cancel before it ships?
Contact us as soon as you can. The voluntary cancellation policy allows requests within 12 hours before shipment and provides for a 12.5% processing fee. Statutory remedies are unaffected.
I have a big project. Can you help?
Yes. Use the wholesale enquiry page and tell us the products, quantities and your delivery postcode.
Where do I get help?
Email theteam@customersupport.care or use the Contact page. Include the product name and your question, plus your order reference if you have one.
The complete guide
Hand tiller: the complete guide
3 min readLawnEdge New Zealand
A spade turns soil in lumps. A hoe scrapes the surface. This tiller rolls through a bed and crumbles the top layer fine, with a blade behind the gears that hooks out weeds in the same pass. It is the tool for prepping a bed, working in compost, aerating round plants and keeping rows clean between crops.
Specifications
Rotating head of four interlocking star-shaped gears, nine teeth each
Built-in weeding blade in hardened manganese steel with a protective coating
Stainless steel shaft with a reinforced plastic sleeve
Adjustable handle length
Rubber grip
Manual, no power needed
How to use it
Set the handle length so you are not stooping.
If the soil is dry and hard, water it the day before. Moist, not wet, is ideal.
Push the gears into the bed and roll the tool back and forth with steady pressure. Let the gears do the work.
Work across the bed in rows. Go over it twice for deeper aeration.
Use the blade to hook out any weeds the gears lift, and pick out stones and old roots as you go.
When to use it
Before planting, to loosen and aerate the bed. During the season, to mix in fertiliser and break a crusted surface. After harvest, to work in compost and break down old roots. Any time weeds show up between rows.
Where it works
Raised beds. Veg plots. Flower borders. Between rows and around established plants, where the narrow head gets in without disturbing roots. It copes with small stones. Pick out the bigger ones first or they jam the gears.
Is it right for the job?
It breaks up bed soil, not virgin ground. For a lawn or a patch that has never been dug, loosen it with a fork first, then use the tiller to crumble it fine. For the lawn itself, see the dethatching rake. A kneeling pad makes long sessions easier.
Looking after it
Knock the soil off the gears and wipe the blade after each use. A drop of oil on the gear axle now and then keeps it rolling. Check the handle sections are tight before the season starts and store it indoors, out of the rain.
